A new GQ photoshoot has reignited speculation that Andrew Garfield is set to star in Luca Guadagnino’s long-awaited adaptation of American Psycho.

The images, taken by Richard Burbridge and styled by George Cortina for the magazine’s Men of the Year issue, feature the 43-year-old actor in pinstripe suits, sharp shirts with contrasting collars, and a black latex-look Saint Laurent trench coat. The styling evokes the corporate 1990s aesthetic associated with Patrick Bateman, the protagonist of the 2000 film directed by Mary Harron. The cover image depicts Garfield skipping rope in white boxers, a direct visual callback to a famous sequence in the earlier adaptation.

Guadagnino and Garfield previously collaborated on the social thriller After the Hunt, which was released last year. The two are currently promoting their new film, Artificial, an OpenAI production that has received strong reviews on the festival circuit. While the current project has generated buzz, the visual similarities in the GQ spread have led online commentators to link the actor to the American Psycho project. Social media users described the look as a test run for the role. One user, Sarah, asked if the images were for Patrick Bateman, while another, Terrence, called it a test run. A third user, Ivy, noted the Bateman tease. Another observer agreed that the styling looked like American Psycho and suggested Garfield might be Guadagnino’s pick.

The project has been in development for over two years, but recent comments from the director suggested a shift in momentum. In May 2025, during CinemaCon, Guadagnino stated in a video segment that the team was working hard to bring the new adaptation to the screen. He praised writer Scott Z. Burns, saying the script was coming out very handsomely. The director mentioned he was in conversation with exciting performers for the leads but did not share names. However, in October 2026, Guadagnino told Vulture that he might do the film one day, a comment that appeared to lower expectations for a firm commitment.

Earlier casting reports have fluctuated. In December 2024, it was reported that Austin Butler would play Bateman, following rumors involving Jacob Elordi. Author Bret Easton Ellis later claimed that a couple of high-profile actors had passed on the project. Lionsgate film chief Adam Fogelson previously described Guadagnino as the perfect visionary to helm the new iteration. In a statement, Fogelson said the studio was thrilled to add the director to their slate, calling him a brilliant artist capable of creating a whole new interpretation of the classic intellectual property.

The new film is not expected to be a direct remake. Guadagnino’s version is poised to be a new take with a more erotic emphasis than the 2000 original. The age of the character may also be adjusted, as Bateman is 27 in the source material, while Garfield is in his 40s. The full cover interview with Garfield is available in GQ’s Men of the Year issue and on the magazine’s website.
