A University of Pittsburgh student waived her preliminary hearing on Tuesday, moving her terroristic threat case to the next legal stage.
Eden Schwartz, a sophomore studying criminal justice, appeared before Judge Daniel Butler at Pittsburgh Municipal Court. Her attorney, Chris Capozzi, filed the waiver, which sent both terroristic threats and threats to use weapons of mass destruction charges to the Court of Common Pleas. No evidence was presented during the Tuesday session.
The court conference produced a specific change to Schwartz's bail conditions. The original terms from her October 21 arraignment prohibited contact with the university. Officer Ryan Moore, the arresting officer, requested the amendment on behalf of the University Police Department. A representative for the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office confirmed the terms were updated so Schwartz could attend administrative proceedings. The change allows her to undergo the university's internal student conduct process.
Schwartz was arrested on October 20 after posting a threat to bomb the statistics department on her Instagram story. The post triggered an evacuation of Posvar Hall. K9 units from multiple law enforcement agencies cleared the building following the evacuation. Schwartz's attorney declined to comment on the Tuesday proceedings.
The formal arraignment is set for December 21. At that hearing, Schwartz will enter a plea regarding the two charges currently held by the Court of Common Pleas.
