Three new premium large-format auditoriums opened at AMC Tysons Corner Center last Friday, October 30. The addition marks the completion of a multi-million-dollar overhaul that has been underway since March. The project included the installation of a 4DX screen, a feature previously absent from this specific location.
The 4DX format uses moving seats and more than 21 environmental effects to synchronize with on-screen action. These effects include water sprays, snow, and scents. AMC first introduced this technology at a Houston, Texas location in February. The company plans to roll out the format to 40 theaters in the U.S. and Europe by the end of 2027.
Dan Ellis, executive vice president and chief operations, development and marketing officer at AMC, stated in a press release that the theater is a popular destination in the Washington, D.C. area. He cited this popularity as the reason for the investment. The goal was to bring a fresh look and feel to the 16-screen theater, which had not undergone comprehensive improvements since it opened in September 2005.
The renovation also converted a second auditorium to Dolby Cinema. This addition joins an existing IMAX-branded screen and a previous Dolby Cinema room, neither of which were part of the new construction work. The Prime at AMC auditorium now features recliner seating, laser projection technology, and enhanced surround sound. According to online showtimes, this room is currently screening Nathan Fielder’s documentary about Elizabeth Holmes.
The first movies scheduled for the 4DX screen in Tysons are “Clayface” and “Wicker.” The latter is a fantasy-romance film starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård. The renovation team also installed heated recliners in all traditional auditoriums. They refreshed the hallways, box office, and MacGuffins Bar, which serves food and alcohol to patrons 21 and older.
The project proceeded in phases over approximately seven months to keep the theater open during construction. The AMC location is situated on the third floor of Tysons Corner Center at 1961 Chain Bridge Road.
