OpenAI Targets $1.25 Trillion Valuation in Pre-IPO Capital Push

The AI leader is nearing a $30 billion private funding round that would set a new record for private company worth before its public market debut.

OpenAI is reportedly on the verge of closing a massive private funding round that would value the company at $1.25 trillion. This pre-money valuation marks a significant escalation in the company's worth, positioning it as the most valuable private entity in history if the deal is finalized. The move signals a strategic preference for securing additional private capital over immediately launching a public offering, a shift that could redefine the trajectory of the company's upcoming initial public offering.

Sources indicate that the round is being led by Coatue Management, with significant participation from investors in the United Arab Emirates. The total amount sought is up to $30 billion. This latest development follows a similar report from a month ago, which cited a slightly higher valuation of $1.4 trillion for a comparable raise. Because terms are still under negotiation, the final figures and valuation could shift before the transaction is completed.

A key component of the current discussions involves a potential linkage between the capital injection and infrastructure expansion. The funding from UAE-based investors may be coupled with a separate agreement to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI within the region. This dual approach suggests that the financial raise is part of a broader strategy to bolster the company's operational backbone, ensuring it has the necessary hardware to support its growing model requirements.

The path to this valuation has been rapid. In March, OpenAI completed a previous funding round that valued the ChatGPT creator at $852 billion on a post-money basis. Shortly after, in June, the company filed confidential paperwork with regulators to prepare for an IPO. By securing a valuation above the $1 trillion mark now, OpenAI raises the benchmark for its public debut, potentially forcing the market to assign an even higher price tag to its shares once they begin trading on public exchanges.

The implications of OpenAI's soaring valuation extend beyond its own balance sheet, creating pressure on its primary rival, Anthropic. Industry observers believe Anthropic is closer to materializing its own IPO, with rumors suggesting its public S-1 filing could be released at any time. According to recent reports, Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public launch. This target follows its May funding round, where it raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation, a step many viewed as its final major private raise before going public.

As both companies navigate the complexities of pre-IPO financing, the gap in their private valuations narrows, setting the stage for a highly competitive public market entry. OpenAI declined to comment on the current negotiations. With terms still fluid, the final outcome will hinge on whether the UAE partners agree to the proposed computing capacity deal and whether the $1.25 trillion valuation holds firm against market expectations.
