Anthropic Investors See Stakes Worth Billions Ahead of Public Debut
Early and late-stage backers of the AI giant are sitting on massive gains at the company's current private valuation, with potential for further growth upon its expected listing.

The figure stands at nearly $10 billion. That is the current value of a single investor’s stake in Anthropic, the leading artificial intelligence laboratory. This specific holding belongs to Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google. His position illustrates the immense wealth accumulation occurring among the company’s backers. This wealth is generated even before the firm officially enters the public markets. The company is anticipated to list this year. Analysts expect a valuation reaching as high as $2 trillion. Such a price tag would create a significant financial windfall for all shareholders. However, substantial gains are already realized at the current private market price.
Anthropic’s latest private valuation stands at $965 billion. At this level, the stakes held by various venture capital firms and individual investors total billions of dollars. These figures represent the worth of their shares based on the most recent funding round. The data highlights the disparity between entry points and current valuations. Early investors entered when the company was worth far less. Later-stage investors joined in when valuations were already in the hundreds of billions. Both groups have seen their investments grow exponentially in a short period.
Eric Schmidt invested in the company’s Series A round in 2021. At that time, Anthropic was valued at $461 million. Today, he owns approximately 1% of the company. His stake is now valued at nearly $10 billion. This represents a massive increase from his original entry point. The growth reflects the broader surge in interest and valuation for artificial intelligence companies. Schmidt’s position is one of the most significant individual holdings reported in this context.
Institutional investors have also made substantial bets on the company’s future. Iconiq wrote a check for $6 billion last year. At that time, the company was valued at $183 billion. That late-stage investment is now worth $17 billion. If the IPO proceeds as expected, this amount could potentially double. Menlo Ventures led the Series D round. The firm has invested more than $1 billion in total over time. Their current stake is valued at $14 billion. These figures demonstrate the depth of capital flowing into the AI sector.
Sequoia entered the fold earlier this year. The firm invested $3 billion when the company was valued at $380 billion. This purchase secured them about 1% ownership. Their investment has already more than doubled in value since they joined. Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a significant position. They invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. Since then, they have added another $400 million to their stake. Their holdings are now worth billions. Kutcher left the firm this year to start a new venture capital company.
Spark Capital holds the only known board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round. At that time, the company was valued at $5 billion. Their position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold. The stake is now worth $7 billion. This growth trajectory mirrors the rapid expansion of the company’s market cap. As the IPO approaches, these figures are expected to rise further. The public listing will serve as a major liquidity event for these long-time and recent supporters.
