Musk’s $76M October Flood Targets Texas Senate Race and DOGE Oversight

New FEC filings reveal a massive surge in personal funding for America PAC, with nearly half the money poured into attacking the Democratic Texas candidate.

For voters in the Mid-Atlantic, the news from Washington carries a direct weight: the man behind Tesla and SpaceX is pouring his personal fortune into the final weeks of the midterm elections. A pre-election report filed Thursday evening with the Federal Election Commission reveals that Elon Musk injected more than $76 million into his political committee, America PAC, during the first half of October. This cash infusion is designed to tip the scales for Republican candidates as the general election approaches, signaling a heavy-handed effort to secure control of Congress.

The numbers behind this final push are staggering. In just two weeks, the group spent nearly $43 million. Despite this aggressive spending, America PAC entered the campaign’s last leg with nearly $47 million in cash remaining. This liquidity allows the committee to continue buying airtime and digital space without hesitation. The pace of expenditure has accelerated significantly, with the PAC shifting its strategy toward online platforms. It spent $11.4 million on digital ads in the same period, a figure that now rivals its combined spending on traditional mailers and text messages.

The primary target of this financial firepower is the U.S. Senate race in Texas. The state drew $15.2 million from the PAC in October alone, which is double the amount spent there during the entire summer. Of that total, $12.4 million was allocated specifically to attack Democratic candidate James Talarico, while $2.8 million went to promoting Republican Ken Paxton. Daily filings since the initial report indicate another $9.1 million has been spent against Talarico. This brings the PAC’s total spending against the Democrat this cycle to nearly $28 million, representing approximately 40 percent of everything the group has spent supporting or opposing candidates.

Musk’s personal involvement extends beyond the checkbook. He has used his social media presence on X to criticize Talarico, calling him “a creep” and suggesting he would “vote to take away your kids and transition them.” Earlier in the month, Musk amplified a claim that Talarico had been treated in a mental health facility. Talarico responded swiftly to the billionaire’s comments, stating, “There is something deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal US Senator.” America PAC declined to comment on the latest spending surge.

According to analysis of FEC filings, Musk has now given more than $445 million to Republican political groups for this election cycle, cementing his status as the largest known individual donor in the midterms. Since July, more than $165 million of that total has flowed directly into America PAC. The Texas race remains a statistical toss-up. An Emerson College poll of 1,000 likely voters, conducted between October 17 and 19, found Talarico leading by two points at 48 percent, with Paxton at 46 percent, a margin within the poll’s error range.

The stakes for Musk extend well beyond the Texas ballot box. If Democrats take control of the House, lawmakers have signaled they will launch investigations into his role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). They plan to scrutinize federal contracts awarded to his companies and what California Representative Zoe Lofgren described as an “astounding” number of conflicts of interest. A unified Democratic Congress would present an even more challenging environment for his business interests.

On Friday, Silicon Valley Democrats added another layer to the potential scrutiny. Representatives Sam Liccardo, Jimmy Panetta, and Ro Khanna sent a letter to the White House demanding an investigation into restrictions on SpaceX’s Starshield satellite service in Ukraine. They vowed that the next Congress “will closely scrutinize federal funding awarded to Mr. Musk’s businesses.” As the election draws to a close, the financial and political pressure on Musk’s empire intensifies.
