Kimi Antonelli is the youngest Formula 1 world champion in the sport's history. He clinched the title at the Mexico City Grand Prix, ending his first full season with the championship secured before the final races of the year.

The 19-year-old driver stood on the podium with Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Hamilton and Verstappen, the first and third all-time champions, both described Antonelli's achievement as incredible. Antonelli said he would frame the podium photo for his home, calling it a special moment to stand alongside drivers who shaped the sport's history.

Antonelli joined Mercedes in 2025 to replace Hamilton. His debut season was inconsistent, leading some observers to question his readiness for the top tier. George Russell, his teammate, was the championship favorite entering this season after outperforming Antonelli the previous year.

Antonelli changed that dynamic early. He finished first race on Russell's tail and won the second race. That victory started a streak of five consecutive wins that put him in control of the standings. He never lost that lead. Even when Mercedes lost its early car advantage, Antonelli remained competitive while Russell slipped behind Verstappen and Hamilton in the points table.

Damon Hill, the 1996 world champion, told BBC Radio 5 live that Antonelli will only get better. Hill noted that while Antonelli will face hard times, his talent is undeniable. Lando Norris, the outgoing champion, said the title could not have gone to a better person. Norris praised Antonelli's kindness and his ability to exploit his car better than anyone else.

Antonelli credited last year's difficulties for his growth. He said the pressure of racing for a major team immediately made him mature faster than if he had joined a smaller outfit. He admitted to being tense during qualifying in Mexico, noting he was less aggressive than in previous races. He said he struggled to see clearly on the final lap while following Verstappen and Hamilton home because he was crying.

His father Marco and mother Veronica greeted him at the end of the race. Antonelli said his father kept him grounded during high moments and supported him during difficult sessions. In the post-race news conference, Antonelli paused to collect himself after remembering his late grandfather. He said he cried too much but was glad for the result.

The title confirms Antonelli's place among the sport's top drivers. He has removed all jeopardy from the title fight through consistent performance. The season is not over, but the championship is decided. Antonelli will spend the rest of the year competing without the pressure of the title fight.
