The Philadelphia Phillies did not extend a qualifying offer to shortstop Alec Bohm before the 5 p.m. ET deadline on Monday. The decision leaves the 30-year-old veteran free to negotiate with any club in Major League Baseball immediately.

The team passed on the option to pay Bohm $23.15 million for the 2027 season. Accepting that figure would have protected Philadelphia's draft position if Bohm departed in free agency. The club previously used this tool to secure compensation when Ranger Suárez left for the Boston Red Sox last winter.

Bohm's 2026 statistical output informed the front office's choice. FanGraphs data shows the former No. 3 overall pick finished the year with a .698 OPS and 0.2 WAR. The Phillies currently face urgent needs in the outfield and bullpen. Committing over $23 million to an interior position player limited their financial flexibility for those external acquisitions.

Dave Dombrowski, the president of baseball operations, addressed Bohm's status during a year-end press conference last month. He stated that it was too early to declare the team was moving on from the shortstop. Dombrowski noted that the organization would need to see how the roster pieces fit together before making a final determination on the player's future.

The Phillies remain free to re-sign Bohm without compensation if they choose to do so. However, if he signs with another organization, Philadelphia will lose any draft-pick protection. The move signals a shift in the team's strategy for the upcoming offseason.

Dombrowski praised Bohm's contributions during his tenure with the club. He highlighted the player's work ethic and his ability to hit key balls. The executive acknowledged that Bohm typically drives in around 90 runs per season. He said the team would have to find ways to replace that production if Bohm is not back in 2027.
