Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow threw five touchdown passes in regulation before scrambling for a ninth-yard score in overtime to secure a 43-36 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
Burrow completed 33 of 48 passes for 462 yards in the win. His performance marked his second 400-yard game this season and the ninth of his career. The stat line is rare in professional football history.
The quarterback joins Hall of Famer Norm Van Brocklin as the only players to throw for at least 450 yards with five touchdowns, rush for a score, and throw multiple interceptions in a single game. Van Brocklin achieved the feat on Sept. 28, 1951, when he set the single-game passing record with 554 yards for the Los Angeles Rams.
The Bengals trailed by 13 points at halftime before rallying for the second consecutive week. Tennessee took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. This marks the first time since 2020 that a team has recovered from 13-point first-half deficits in back-to-back games. It is the third time in franchise history that the Bengals have accomplished this feat.
Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence provided support to Burrow during the late-game deficit. Lawrence told the quarterback he was legendary and to go be legendary. The defender finished with seven tackles and recorded a sack that kept the Titans out of field-goal range late in regulation.
Lawrence also recovered a fumble in the third quarter and teamed with Demetrius Knight Jr. to tackle running back Tony Pollard in the end zone for a safety. That play gave Cincinnati a 23-21 lead with 46 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Titans safety Amari Hooker intercepted Burrow three times. This tied a franchise record shared by nine other players. Hooker became the first NFL player with three interceptions in a game since the 2023 season.
Titans quarterback Cam Ward threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns in his first 300-yard game of his two-year career. He connected with Wan'Dale Robinson for a 15-yard score with 3:42 remaining to put Tennessee ahead 36-29. Gunnar Helm caught a pass for the 2-point conversion.
Tennessee could not convert on their final overtime possession. Ward threw an incomplete pass to Elic Ayomanor on fourth-and-3 at the Tennessee 35-yard line. The Titans finished with a 1-7 record after the loss.
The Bengals move to a 5-2 record, their best standing since 2021. They will play the Atlanta Falcons in Madrid next Sunday. The Titans have a bye week before hosting Jacksonville on Nov. 15.
