Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, on Sunday. The victory marks his ninth win of the 2026 Formula One season and places him firmly in control of the world championship race.
Starting from pole position, Antonelli crossed the finish line with a time of 1:35:16.650 over 56 laps. Charles Leclerc of Monaco finished second, trailing the winner by 13.078 seconds. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing secured third place, finishing 17.485 seconds behind Antonelli.
The race strategy proved decisive. While rivals executed two pit stops, Mercedes committed to a one-stop strategy for Antonelli. He remained on track until Lap 25 for his single service before running to the end. Antonelli credited the team for trusting his judgment on tire management.
"It was a perfect way to end the weekend; it was an incredible team effort, especially from strategy to believe in me and go for one stop," Antonelli said.
The win extends Antonelli's lead in the drivers' standings to 123 points over his Mercedes teammate, George Russell. With five races remaining, Russell must take victory in the next event in Mexico City to maintain a mathematical chance at the title. A failure to win in Mexico will hand the championship to Antonelli.
Mercedes also widened its advantage in the constructors' championship. The team now holds 607 points, leading Ferrari by a margin of 133 points. Ferrari sits second with 474 points. Antonelli has now won both United States races on this year's calendar, including a recent triumph in Las Vegas.
Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, described the performance as the best of Antonelli's career to date. "Getting off the start with the inferior tyre and then controlling it at all times. The race of a champion who isn't the champion yet, but exceptional," Wolff said. The next round of racing will take place in Mexico City.
