Assistant coach Aaron Danks will guide Bayern Munich into Sunday’s Bundesliga match against Freiburg. The club announced Saturday that head coach Vincent Kompany remains in a hospital receiving treatment for a virus. Kompany, 40, collapsed on the training pitch on Friday. The team sits at the top of the Bundesliga table, holding a one-point lead over Freiburg.

Max Eberl, the director of sport, described Kompany’s condition as stable during a Saturday news conference. He stated that medical examinations are ongoing to determine the specific nature of the illness. Eberl noted that the club has not set a specific recovery date. He emphasized that the absence would be measured in weeks rather than days. “Vinnie will be given all the time he needs. We're not starting to put together any timeframes,” Eberl said.

Danks, who is from England, led the press briefing in Kompany’s place. He reported speaking with Kompany on Friday. The conversation focused on Kompany’s health rather than tactical matters. “I explained to him that we wouldn't be having no football conversations. It was just checking in on his health and making sure he's OK,” Danks said. He added that the coaching staff would work together to maintain the club’s momentum.

Kompany returned to the dugout for Wednesday’s home match against Arsenal. He had missed the pre-match press conference due to the virus. After the game, Kompany admitted he ignored early warning signs. “I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course, I didn't listen to my body, and then at some point, my body just said, 'Enough is enough!'” he said.

Bayern’s second team match was postponed on Friday following the incident. Eberl explained the club did not seek a delay for the Bundesliga fixture against Freiburg. He viewed a strong performance and a positive result as the best way to support Kompany’s recovery. “That would probably be one of the best things we could do to help him recover,” Eberl said.

Danks confirmed that Joshua Kimmich, the Germany captain, will miss the Freiburg game. Kimmich has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday. Bayern Munich’s next Champions League fixture is scheduled for November 3 in Madrid against Atletico.

The club will finalize its lineup for Sunday’s match at Freiburg. The game will determine if Bayern extends its lead at the top of the league. Kompany’s medical team will continue monitoring his condition in the coming days.
