Mbappe chases Ballon d'Or with record goal totals but zero trophies
The French forward relies on individual scoring records to challenge rivals who won major titles this season.

Kylian Mbappe has a strong case for the Ballon d'Or based on individual statistics, yet his bid lacks the team success that typically defines the award's winners.
The prize is being handed out at a ceremony in London on Monday. While the trophy does not come with a cash award, receiving it increases a player's market value and public standing. Mbappe is not the favorite according to bookmakers, and he did not finish as the top scorer in every competition last season. However, he has worked to promote his candidacy ahead of the event.
His strongest statistical argument comes from the 2026 World Cup in North America. Mbappe won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament. He also became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals in 22 matches. Lionel Messi ranks second with 21 goals, and Miroslav Klose is third with 16.
At the club level, Mbappe finished as La Liga's top scorer with 25 goals. He also led the scoring charts in the Champions League with 15 goals. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward noted that he was the top scorer in the largest competitions.
The main weakness in his bid is the absence of silverware during the 2025-26 season. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This extends the club's streak without a major trophy to a second straight season. The team was managed first by Xabi Alonso and then by Alvaro Arbeloa.
France also fell short on the international stage. The national team placed fourth at the World Cup after losing to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff. Rival contenders achieved better results with their teams. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane won three trophies with Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title.
Mbappe argues that the award should recognize individual performance rather than team success. He told radio station RFI that the jury will announce a player, not a team. His club manager Jose Mourinho supported his view, stating that Mbappe made history this summer. History shows that every winner over the past decade lifted at least one trophy. The last player to win without a major title was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013. Ronaldo scored 66 goals that season and ended Lionel Messi's four-year winning streak.
