Villa shock stops City’s perfect Premier League run

A rebuilt Aston Villa squad ended Manchester City’s seven-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory on Saturday.

Manchester City fans watched their team’s flawless start to the season come to an end. The 10-time English champions dropped points in a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa. This result breaks a long-standing streak of victories for the visitors. It also keeps the pressure on the title race at the top of the table.

Nicolas Jackson scored both goals for the home side. He played a key role in Unai Emery’s newly assembled squad. The defeat marks the fourth consecutive season that City have lost at this specific venue. It was a significant stumble for a team that had started the year without a single defeat.

The match turned quickly in the early minutes. Villa took the lead after just six minutes of play. Marc Guehi had a heavy touch that allowed Jackson to gain possession. Jackson cut inside Elliott Anderson and fired a high shot past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The early goal set the tone for the rest of the contest.

City controlled the ball for much of the first half. They created several chances to equalize but found themselves blocked by Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov all had shots saved. Ndiaye also struck the post, keeping the score level at the break.

The deadlock finally broke in the second half. Erling Haaland scored on 52 minutes with a powerful header from a Ndiaye cross. This goal marked his 13th in 10 appearances this season. Josko Gvardiol nearly put City ahead moments later, but Suzuki directed his drive onto the crossbar.

Villa responded on the hour mark to take the lead again. Ibrahim Mbaye broke through the City defense and found Jackson on the wing. Jackson’s low shot slipped past Donnarumma, who should have made the save. City pushed for a late equalizer but could not find a way past the Villa defense.

The result changes the standings for the top of the table. Arsenal has the chance to match City’s points total if they beat Everton at home later on Saturday. For Villa, the win is their sixth in seven games across all competitions. This victory lifts them to sixth place in the league.

The win highlights the work Emery has done over the past four years. He has transformed Villa from a dormant club into a Champions League contender. This success has continued despite losing much of his core squad. Six players who started last season’s Europa League victory left during the summer transfer window.

The new signings are already making an impact. Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi have helped the team overcome a slow start to the campaign. Their contributions have been vital in maintaining Villa’s high level of performance.

City had been winning despite concerns about their future in the league. The club is appealing a guilty verdict on more than 100 charges of breaking financial rules between 2009 and 2018. Potential sanctions include heavy fines or even relegation. While the players showed little sign of being affected, two defensive errors proved costly in this match.
