Arlington County will charge electric vehicle drivers 30 cents per kilowatt-hour for public slow charging starting November 1. This rate marks a 72 percent jump from the current base fee of $17.46 per kilowatt-hour.

The Arlington County Board approved the new pricing structure for its network of public charging stations. Officials state that the change will add approximately $5 to the cost of a full charging session for residents. The fee increase takes effect next week.

Local drivers reacted to the new rates with mixed feelings. Elijah Colson, an EV owner, described the jump as substantial. He noted that the new cost approaches the price of gasoline. However, he maintained that electricity remains cheaper than filling a gas tank. Colson said he typically spends between nine and 10 dollars on a charge, compared to 40 dollars for gas.

Another resident, Shihyag, questioned why electricity prices have risen so sharply across the board. She pointed to data centers and power grid demand as primary drivers of the increase. County leaders agreed that rising installation costs and higher electricity prices contributed to the decision.

The price hike occurs while demand for charging infrastructure grows in the area. Arlington currently operates 51 public EV charging locations. The county board cited these factors as justification for the immediate rate adjustment.
