A 36-year-old British woman died on Tuesday after a strong current in the Bahamas swept her away while she tried to rescue her two sons. Police in Bimini confirmed the sudden death and opened an investigation into the incident.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force reported that the woman, who is believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, was snorkeling near the southern tip of the island with her husband and children. A powerful current carried both boys out of the water. The mother was pulled under as she swam toward them to reach her sons. Rescuers eventually brought the boys back to safety.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10:00 a.m. regarding an unresponsive woman at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. The woman had been pulled from the water and taken to the dock, where bystanders administered CPR. Medics then transported her to a local clinic for treatment.
A local doctor pronounced her dead at the clinic after efforts to revive her failed. The police force stated that foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact medical cause of death.
The UK Foreign Office confirmed the death of a British national. A spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family.
