The Royal Bahamas police force is investigating the death of a 36-year-old British woman who died on Tuesday in North Bimini. The incident occurred during a family snorkeling trip near the southern point of the island.
Police reported that the woman was swimming with her husband and their two sons when a strong current took both boys. While attempting to reach the children, the current swept the woman away as well. Rescue teams later pulled the boys from the water.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. By the time they arrived, the woman had already been transported to the local clinic for medical care.
A local doctor declared her dead at the facility despite efforts to resuscitate her. Police noted that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after she was pulled from the water. The force stated that foul play is not suspected at this time.
An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is aware of the case. A spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family.
Bimini is the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland. The island group sits between Andros and Miami. It is known for its history with Ernest Hemingway and hosts a shark research center.
