Interior Minister Laurent Nunez officially classified a fatal shooting rampage in northern France as a terrorist crime on Friday, marking a formal shift in how authorities treat the incident. The attack in Trappes and La Verriere, communities on the outskirts of Paris, left one man dead and five others wounded. Among the injured is a 12 year old girl who sustained serious injuries and underwent surgery.

The violence began at 10:30 am local time. A 39 year old man identified as Kevin T drove through the area for approximately 15 minutes. He fired an automatic weapon at three specific locations: a petrol station, a medical centre, and a children's playground. Police stopped the spree when they arrested the suspect. Local MP Laurent Mazaury reported that T told officers he intended to kill foreigners. Mazaury described the suspect as a racist person.

Investigators found an older style semiautomatic weapon from the World War II era inside T's car. The vehicle also contained tear gas grenades. Prosecutors are currently examining whether T conspired with a terrorist group. A member of his immediate family circle was also taken into custody. The dead victim was identified as Pengo Bassio Wangi. French media noted that the deceased was young and Black. The wounded included a woman wearing a headscarf and the girl, who was also wearing a headscarf. Prosecutors stated that three of the five injured people remain in critical condition.

President Emmanuel Macron labeled the incident a racist terrorist attack. He called it a turning point in the life of the Republic and the nation. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu described the case as very serious and confirmed that all security and judicial resources were fully mobilized. Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh said the gunman fired at random to cause a bloodbath. Rabeh, who has Moroccan roots, stated that the victims could have been his own relatives. He described the attack as objectively racist and probably Islamophobic.

The mother of the injured girl told broadcaster RTL that she asked whether her daughter was targeted because of her headscarf. She emphasized that the girl was born in Trappes and has the right to build her life in France. The girl was shot eight times and moved to a children's hospital for surgery. Her mother asked how anyone could do this to a child.

The shooting occurred while the country grapples with cost of living and student protests. Authorities plan to deploy 70,000 police officers on Saturday when more demonstrations are expected. Some far right voices have blamed Muslim youths for the unrest. National Rally leader Marine Le Pen condemned the shooting as barbaric. Muslim groups accused the populist right of fostering hatred through Islamophobic rhetoric. They pointed to Le Pen's campaign proposal to fine women who wear the headscarf in public.

Rabeh called politicians who make negative comments about Muslims criminals. The French Muslim Council blamed promoters of anti Muslim hate speech, saying they have blood on their hands. Monitors report that anti Muslim hostility is growing. The European Parliament passed a resolution last week by 381 votes to 167 with 15 abstentions. The resolution calls for an EU strategy against Islamist entryism and the Muslim Brotherhood network. Farid Hafez of Georgetown University's Bridge Initiative called the vote a major symbolic victory for anti Muslim forces.

Amnesty International stated in June that Islamophobic violence in the United Kingdom had reached emergency levels. The EU's Fundamental Rights Agency says one in two Muslims in Europe face racial discrimination. California's attorney general reported that anti Muslim hate crimes in the US rose 54 percent in 2025. The number of reported incidents increased from 24 to 38.
