Liverpool defeated Chelsea 6-5 in a penalty shootout at Anfield on Wednesday night to advance to the League Cup quarterfinals. The match concluded after a 1-1 draw in regulation, marking a decisive moment in a season where both managers are navigating new leadership roles.
The scoring began in the 40th minute when Chelsea’s Morgan Rogers converted a penalty. The opportunity arose after Ryan Gravenberch collided with Moises Caicedo in the box. Just three minutes later, Cody Gakpo restored parity for Liverpool. He stepped up to the spot following a handball by Wesley Fofana, putting the ball in the net to force extra time.
The shootout delivered dramatic swings before the final kick. Chelsea’s Valentin Barco struck the post, keeping Liverpool within striking distance. Kostas Tsimikas then missed a chance to end it by shooting over the crossbar. Ryan Gravenberch was denied by Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, but Giorgi Mamardashvili saved Emmanuel Emegha’s attempt to keep the visitors alive. Joe Gomez scored for Liverpool before Wesley Fofana fired a penalty into the Kop, sealing the 6-5 victory for the hosts.
Manager Andoni Iraola made seven changes to the lineup that beat Brighton 2-0 on Sunday. In contrast, Xabi Alonso altered only four players from the Chelsea side that lost 2-0 to Tottenham on Saturday. The tactical adjustments resulted in a high-intensity contest that required a decisive finish to determine the winner.
Iraola expressed satisfaction with the result, noting the team’s recent home form. “We are really happy. Three wins at home in a row is very important,” he said. “We were struggling at home in the league but now we go against Arsenal on Sunday.” Liverpool will face Bournemouth in the last eight, with Iraola aiming to continue the club’s recent cup success.
For Alonso, the loss marks his third defeat in three visits to Anfield as a manager. Previous losses occurred while he managed Bayer Leverkusen in 2024 and Real Madrid in 2025. He acknowledged the difficulty of the spot kicks after the match. “Every time you reach the penalties, someone will feel it is harsh to go out of the competition,” Alonso said. “We were showing a good level and this is what it takes to come to these stadiums.”
The result extends Liverpool’s strong start under Iraola, who is following the path of predecessors Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot. Both former managers reached the League Cup final in their debut campaigns. Liverpool now prepares for a Premier League match against Arsenal on Sunday, while Chelsea turns its attention to league play.
