A resident of Alexandria lost more than $800,000 to a fraudster posing as a cyber crimes agent. The scam involved a cashier's check and unfolded during the current week. The victim received a call from an individual claiming to be a law enforcement officer investigating a cyber crime. The caller convinced the resident to issue a cashier's check to recover lost funds. The check was cashed, and the money was withdrawn before the fraud was detected.
The incident stands out against a busy local calendar. Next week, a new Barnes & Noble store is scheduled to open in the West End neighborhood. The opening draws significant foot traffic, with the store's launch story ranking second on local reader metrics. Meanwhile, Community Lodgings is seeking approvals for a 91-unit affordable housing complex in Arlandria. The development aims for late 2026 completion. Officials have not yet finalized the approval process for the new building.
Local weather conditions contributed to the weekend activities. Today's high temperature reached 77 degrees Fahrenheit at 2:35 p.m., which was 13 degrees above the seasonal normal. The low temperature was 55 degrees Fahrenheit at 3:25 a.m. Wind gusts peaked at 30 mph. Tonight, the temperature is expected to drop to 46 degrees. Saturday is forecast to be mostly sunny with a high near 65 degrees.
The weekend brings a mix of community events and commercial openings. Saturday morning features an Inova Blood Drive at 9:00 a.m. At 11:00 a.m., the Alexandria Fall-O-Ween event takes place at John Carlyle Square. A community concert titled This is Halloween is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday events include the Fall Music at the Market Series at 9:00 a.m. An open house for Imperium, a strength training studio, is set for 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
Additional cultural events are planned for the coming days. On November 1, Imperium will host a free open house in Old Town to discuss strength training methods. On November 3, George Mason University will host high school students from the DMV region for an event called Dialogue for Democracy. A workshop on how Continuing Care Retirement Communities operate is scheduled for November 4. The workshop is free and intended for those considering senior housing options.
The local news cycle also includes a poll asking residents to identify the best bakery in Alexandria. That story received 1,351 views, making it the most-read item on the platform today. The Barnes & Noble story followed with 1,144 views. These metrics reflect high local interest in consumer retail and food services in the district.
