A driver lost $2,400 in cash when a suspect entered their vehicle at a Fairfax County gas station on Oct. 23. Police are investigating the incident as a bank jugging scheme.

The victim withdrew the cash from a bank in Annandale before driving to a station in the Franconia District. While the driver was inside the store, the suspect entered the unlocked vehicle, took the money, and drove away.

Detectives believe the suspect monitored the victim at the bank and tracked the car to the gas station. Surveillance footage captured images of the suspect and the vehicle used in the crime.

The FBI defines bank jugging as a tactic where criminals observe customers withdrawing large sums of cash. They then rob the victims in parking lots or follow them to secondary locations to steal the funds.

Authorities advise drivers to conceal cash and lock it in the glove compartment if it must be left in a vehicle. They also recommend varying banking schedules to avoid predictable patterns and reporting any suspicion of being followed immediately.

Investigators are asking the public to contact the Franconia District Station at 703-922-0894 with any information regarding the theft.
