The city confirmed the cameras are no longer collecting data, ending a program that tracked vehicle movements for 21 days at a time.

Alexandria Police Department officials have stopped using the city's network of fixed license plate readers. The 61 cameras that previously captured vehicle data are now decommissioned and no longer collect information. A public dashboard that displayed search activity is being updated to reflect the change. The data shown on the site reflects searches conducted in September 2026 and will be refreshed every 30 days.
The department cited a commitment to responsible use of law enforcement tools as it moves forward. According to the city, the deactivation follows a review of the program's safeguards. The police department stated that it will continue to respect constitutional rights while maintaining public trust. The next steps for the program were discussed during a recorded City Council meeting.
Before the shutdown, the system operated under strict rules designed to limit data access. Searches were only permitted for legitimate law enforcement purposes, such as criminal investigations or missing person cases. The data was never used for immigration enforcement. Access to the database was restricted to trained and authorized personnel, and all searches were documented and audited.
Virginia law and department policy dictated how long the data remained stored. The retention period was 21 days for all records. The police department did not share this data with federal agencies or law enforcement groups outside of Virginia without a valid court order. An alert from a camera served only as an investigative lead. Officers had to verify the accuracy of the plate and the nature of the alert before taking any enforcement action. An alert alone did not provide automatic grounds to stop a vehicle.
The program was governed by specific state statutes and internal directives. The relevant law is found in Code of Virginia Section 2.2-5517. Internal guidance was outlined in Directive 10.40 of the Alexandria Police Department. These rules defined the scope of the License Plate Reader Program and ensured compliance with state standards for law enforcement agencies.
