The AI assistant market has become saturated, with new productivity tools launching weekly in a bid for user attention. In the midst of this crowded field, Anthropic is making a strategic pivot with the release of Claude Duet. The company is positioning this new application not as a general-purpose personal companion, but as a specialized tool designed for professionals and small businesses. The core tension lies in how Duet differentiates itself from a long list of competitors, including Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo, by narrowing its focus to professional workflow automation rather than casual errands.
Anthropic is drawing a sharp line between its new product and the wave of personal agents currently dominating headlines. The company explicitly states that Duet is not intended for handling simple life tasks like booking tickets or running errands. It also lacks the feature to display real-time browser usage to the user. Instead, the agent is built to manage professional responsibilities, such as constructing daily briefings, creating data dashboards, and suggesting strategic actions based on existing user data. This focus on business utility marks a significant departure from the consumer-friendly approach of some of its rivals.
A key differentiator for Claude Duet is its ability to operate in the background. Like other advanced agents, it utilizes its own virtual machine to complete tasks while the user continues with other work. The system is designed to be proactive, monitoring ongoing tasks and delivering recommendations without constant prompting. It will only interrupt the user if a specific approval is required, allowing for a more seamless integration into a busy professional’s day. This hands-off approach is central to Anthropic’s vision of an agent that works on the user’s behalf rather than waiting for commands.
Under the hood, the new application is powered by the Claude Opus 5.5 model. To ensure it can interact with the broader digital ecosystem, Anthropic has integrated over 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive connectivity allows the agent to pull data from various professional tools and services. Furthermore, the system has been equipped with the ability to make online purchases on behalf of users, utilizing digital wallets from Stripe’s Link and Shopify’s Shop Pay to facilitate transactions.
Security and control remain critical concerns for an agent with purchasing power. Anthropic has implemented measures to ensure that sensitive steps, particularly those involving payments, require explicit user approval. To maintain financial safety, the agent is programmed not to trade securities or move money between different accounts. This limitation suggests a cautious approach to financial autonomy, prioritizing user control over full independence in high-stakes transactions.
The company has also introduced a new security classifier designed to monitor every message processed by the agent. This tool aims to prevent sensitive information from leaking out through the system. By default, the agent is configured to reject requests that ask for highly sensitive data, such as credit card numbers or government identification numbers. This layer of defense is intended to build trust among professionals who may be hesitant to share confidential business data with an AI tool.
The launch of Claude Duet coincides with a broader industry shift from simple AI assistants to autonomous agents. Many of Anthropic’s competitors are moving in a similar direction, focusing on business use cases. For instance, while Meta’s Muse is primarily a personal assistant, the company has also released a version tailored for small businesses with app integrations. Similarly, OpenAI’s Dots has a business-oriented slant due to its integration with professional tools. Anthropic is entering this fray with a product that is deeply embedded in the Claude ecosystem.
Claude Duet is currently available for iOS and Android devices, as well as on the web via Claude.ai. The tool is accessible to Pro and Max customers who are participating in a research preview. Because the product is in a preview phase, users must join a waitlist to gain access. This phased rollout allows Anthropic to gather feedback from a select group of professionals before a wider public launch.
As the market continues to evolve, the distinction between personal and professional AI agents will likely become more pronounced. Anthropic’s strategy with Duet suggests a belief that professionals need a dedicated tool that understands the nuances of business workflows. By focusing on background automation, extensive connectivity, and robust security measures, the company is betting that this specialized approach will resonate with users who are overwhelmed by the general-purpose assistants currently flooding the market.
