German prosecutors arrested an 18-year-old in Hamburg on Thursday on suspicion of driving a 14-year-old Indiana girl to commit suicide. The Hamburg public prosecutor's office announced the charges on Friday. The arrest followed a tip provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The suspect is charged as an indirect perpetrator of murder and grievous bodily harm. Prosecutors state he was part of an online group called the Nefarious Maniac Kult, or NMK. This group operates within a larger international network known as COM.
Between September and October, the suspect allegedly used the Discord platform to exert influence over the girl. Prosecutors described her as psychologically fragile during this period. He allegedly pressured her to cut her own body and write the letters NMK on a wall using her blood. He reportedly required video recordings of these acts.
A few days after the alleged blood ritual, the girl hanged herself in her bedroom. Prosecutors say the suspect then sought a video recording of her death. He allegedly wanted the footage to improve his standing within the group or secure entry to it.
FBI Indianapolis Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. O'Malley said his office worked with the Fort Wayne Police Department to share information with German authorities. That cooperation helped advance the arrest. The Fort Wayne Homicide Unit identified the suspect as a contributor to the juvenile's death.
O'Malley stated that anyone who targets or exploits a child should understand there is no safe haven from justice. He added that the FBI will work with global partners to find suspects regardless of where they live. The case coincides with a reported 300% increase in nihilistic violent extremism cases at the FBI between September 2024 and September 2025. Many of those cases involve a group known as 764, which encourages self-harm and violence without a specific ideology.
The suspect remains in custody in Hamburg. Prosecutors have not yet specified a trial date or the exact location of the upcoming legal proceedings.
