College football rankings often shift after weekend play, but a 42-7 victory in Oxford, Mississippi, sent a clear signal to voters. No. 2 Georgia defeated No. 12 Mississippi on Saturday night, a result that strengthens the Bulldogs' case for the top spot in the AP Top 25.
The Bulldogs controlled the game from the opening whistle. They ran four touchdown drives of 72, 96, 61, and 50 yards during the first 22 minutes. Mississippi crossed the midfield line only once before halftime. Georgia entered the break with a 28-0 lead and finished with 482 total offensive yards.
Gunner Stockton led the offense with a balanced performance. He completed nine of 15 passes for 186 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a 15-yard score. Talyn Taylor caught three touchdown passes of 3, 6, and 65 yards. Ethan Barbour added a 58-yard reception to extend the lead. The rushing attack produced 295 yards, led by Nate Frazier with 107 yards on 16 carries.
The result snapped Mississippi's 16-game home winning streak. It marked the first win for Georgia coach Kirby Smart in Oxford across three attempts. Smart described the effort as a team that embraced the challenge from the start. He said the players acted as hunters and played aggressively throughout the contest.
Mississippi coach Pete Golding admitted the coaching staff did not prepare the team adequately for the matchup. He noted that the lopsided score was not what he expected against a good team. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss completed 18 of 34 passes for 170 yards but faced five sacks. Shekai Mills-Knight scored the only Mississippi touchdown on an 8-yard run. The Rebels finished with 252 yards of offense.
This game contrasts sharply with the two meetings between these teams last season. Georgia won 43-35 at home in 2025, while Mississippi won 39-34 in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl. The previous meeting was a close game, but Saturday's contest lacked that back-and-forth nature.
Georgia will host No. 19 Missouri next Saturday. Mississippi will travel to Oklahoma for its next game. The Bulldogs will now wait to see if their performance secures the No. 1 ranking in the upcoming AP poll and CFP rankings. They join unbeaten Utah and Notre Dame as contenders for the top spot.
