Police have charged Sayed Mohassib, 27, with second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of Katie Suarez, 28. Authorities took Mohassib into custody at his New York City residence on Saturday morning.
Suarez was attacked while jogging near Bay 17th Street in Brooklyn on October 30. Witnesses and reports indicate she sustained two stab wounds to the neck. Her father discovered her after she failed to answer her phone. Suarez remained hospitalized for several days before dying from her injuries.
Investigators identified Mohassib through surveillance footage from a shopping center where Suarez was employed. A knife linked to the case was later located in a landfill on Staten Island, according to local television reports.
Mohassib had previously served in the military but was discharged due to mental health issues. He later attempted to rejoin the NYPD, a process that ended with his admission to a psychiatric ward. Most recently, he worked as a teacher's aide at a school in Brooklyn.
The case is currently under review by the New York City police department. No court date has been announced yet. Prosecutors will file formal charges following the initial arrest.
