Rybakina Sets Up Title Rematch in Ningbo

The world number one advances to the championship match against unseeded Leylah Fernandez after a hard-fought semifinal victory.

The WTA season is entering its final stretch, with top players looking to solidify their standings before the year-end showcase. In Ningbo, China, defending champion Elena Rybakina has secured her spot in the tournament final, setting up a decisive clash for the crown.

Rybakina defeated sixth seed Diana Shnaider in straight sets, with a score of 6-3 and 7-5. This victory positions the 27-year-old to claim the title in consecutive years. The result serves as a significant statement to her competitors ahead of the upcoming WTA Finals.

Her opponent in Sunday's final is unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez. Fernandez earned her place in the championship match by defeating Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic. Both semifinals at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre concluded with the same 6-3, 7-5 scoreline.

The path to the final was not straightforward for the Australian and US Open champion. She arrived in Ningbo following a challenging period that included a heavy loss in Beijing and a withdrawal from Wuhan due to a foot injury. While she showed glimpses of her peak performance, the match against Shnaider required resilience.

Rybakina started the first set with aggression, hitting powerful winners from the back of the court. However, a dip in form forced her to battle through to the end. She ultimately secured the set on her eleventh set point. The second set followed a similar trajectory, with Rybakina managing key points despite struggles with her first-serve accuracy.

The 13th-ranked Shnaider presented unique challenges with her left-handed style. Rybakina noted that switching patterns during rallies was a specific difficulty. She managed to break Shnaider's serve to take a 4-3 lead but was broken to love in the tenth game. She responded with big hitting to retake the lead and served confidently to close the match.

Fernandez presents a similar tactical test for the final, as she is also left-handed. Rybakina plans to use this week to sharpen her game before moving to the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo next week. Following that, she will begin her defense of the WTA Finals title at Indian Wells on November 8.

The world number one maintained a measured outlook on the prospect of winning back-to-back trophies. She acknowledged that the task is never easy but committed to giving her all in the upcoming match. This approach reflects a focus on personal responsibility and consistent effort in high-stakes competition.
