New Foldable iPhone Needs $249 in Gear for Full Use

Apple's first foldable phone launches with key features like stylus support and fast charging that require separate hardware purchases.

Apple’s iPhone Duo is now on sale.

The device is the company’s first foldable smartphone. While the phone itself is available, several core functions require additional purchases to operate at full capacity. A total of $249 in hardware is needed to unlock the stylus, fast charging, and specific smart home features.

The most notable addition is Apple Pencil support. This is the first time an iPhone has supported a stylus. Users can write and sketch on both the inner and outer displays. Apple stated the design mirrors a standard A-series paper notebook. The feature arrives in the iOS 27.2 update next week. Only the Apple Pencil with USB-C is compatible. The current price is $69, reduced from the original $79.

Fast charging requires a specific power adapter. The iPhone Duo reaches 50 percent charge in 20 minutes, but only with a suitable adapter. The box includes a USB-C cable but no charger. Most users may have a 20W adapter, but higher wattage is recommended. Apple’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max costs $34. An alternative is the Anker 100W USB-C charger with a five-foot cable, priced at $29.

Drivers can use the ESR MagSafe Car Mount for navigation. The device clips onto an air vent and holds the phone magnetically. It sells for $19, down from $29. The larger display of the Duo may improve the visibility of step-by-step directions from Apple Maps while using CarPlay.

Cases for the new device are already available. Third-party options include the SPIDERCASE Magnetic Case with a built-in stand and screen protector at $29. The Spigen Ultra Hybrid Pro is a clear MagSafe-compatible case at $39. Apple sells the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand for $129 and the iPhone Duo Case for $79.

The phone also updates StandBy mode. The device can display StandBy views while standing upright, even when not charging. Two views provide access to smart home accessories. The Home Camera view allows users to monitor security systems. Recommended compatible cameras include the Aqara G100 2K model at $39 and the eufy 4K camera at $69. AirPods Pro 3 are also suggested for users upgrading their audio gear. They are currently listed at Amazon for $199, a discount from the standard $249 price.
