The City of Alexandria reports that residents can save an average of $6,323 on a standard solar installation through its Switch Together program. This figure comes from a partnership with Solar United Neighbors that allows homeowners to bundle their purchases. The city launched the initiative to lower the cost of energy upgrades for both renters and property owners. The program offers discounted rates by organizing group buying with vetted installers.

Participants in the heat pump portion of the program can expect savings of about $2,900. This amount represents a 15% discount off the typical price for a standard installation. The city states that heat pumps improve indoor air quality and reduce energy bills. Switching to these systems also lowers emissions. Registration for the program requires no upfront cost or long-term obligation.

A separate campaign called Solarize is currently active in the city. The campaign runs from April 15 through July 15. Residents can sign up for free to receive education on their specific solar options. There is no obligation to purchase equipment after the educational process. The city encourages participants to review the potential for property value increases and energy bill reductions.

The city notes that solar systems typically pay for themselves within 10 to 13 years on average. Participants are matched with installers who have passed a rigorous vetting process. The program also includes optional electric vehicle chargers and home battery storage units. These additional components are available at the same discounted rates as the main installations.

Alexandria offers an Eco-City Homes Recognition Program for residents who adopt sustainable practices. Participants can earn points for various actions taken to reduce their environmental impact. The city updated the program to allow points for every sustainable action a household takes. Homes that meet the criteria receive a yard sign or window cling.

The city advises homeowners to be cautious when exploring solar financing and lease options. It did not participate in the selection of contractors for financing or installation. The city provides links to guides from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Department of Energy. These documents help residents understand the terms of solar leases and panel purchases.

Residents can access the Eco-City website for program details and news. The site also lists locations for electric vehicle charging throughout Alexandria. It includes information on federal tax credits and utility incentives. The city maintains social media accounts on Facebook, X, and Instagram under the handle @EcoCityAlx. Contact information is available at Eco-CityAlexandria@alexandriava.gov.
