Wolves secured a 2-1 victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Wednesday evening, extending the visitors' winning streak and leaving the home side with a sour aftertaste. The result leaves the Robins in 15th place in the Championship table after 14 matches, widening the gap to the play-off positions.
Scott Twine opened the scoring for City with a free-kick, giving the home side a 1-0 lead they held for much of the second half. However, manager Cesar Peixoto made a tactical substitution that proved decisive. He introduced Sean Neave with just over 15 minutes remaining, and the forward changed the momentum of the match within minutes.
Neave first tapped in a close-range shot in the 82nd minute after Bristol City goalkeeper Brad Collins parried a low strike from Adam Armstrong. Seven minutes later, Neave headed home a Kieran Trippier free-kick to complete his brace and secure all three points for Wolves. Both goals came from set-piece situations that Skubala described as frustrating.
Michael Skubala, the Bristol City manager, acknowledged that his squad gave a strong effort but struggled to maintain control in the closing stages. He noted that the team became too negative with passing in the latter part of the game, playing backwards excessively and turning the ball over cheaply in the attacking third. This approach allowed the high-flying visitors to exploit the space left behind.
"I can't knock the effort," Skubala said after the final whistle. "I think the lads worked really hard. We wanted to make it a tight game. I thought the first half, the tactical plan, the lads executed it very well." He emphasized that the manner of the concessions was the primary source of frustration, as the team has defended well in the box for most of the season.
The manager highlighted that the team had sufficient experience to manage the final 20 minutes, suggesting the issue lay in collective performance rather than individual inexperience. He stated that the squad needed to return to their established defensive shape to prevent such late goals. The defeat was particularly painful given the home advantage and the lead they had held into the final 15 minutes.
Bristol City will attempt to close the five-point gap to the top eight this Saturday when they host Norwich City. This match marks the final game before the international break. Norwich has struggled at Ashton Gate this season, but Skubala aims to use the lessons from the Wolves defeat to improve game management and final-third decision making. The team currently sits seven places and five points behind West Ham United, who hold the last play-off spot.
Skubala believes there are valuable lessons to be taken from the loss, specifically regarding first contacts and ball retention under pressure. He praised the fans for their support, noting they were exceptional throughout the evening. Despite the pain of the defeat, he viewed the match as a sore but necessary learning experience for key individuals on the roster who need to refine their execution in high-pressure scenarios.
