The latest round of the UEFA Women's Champions League produced several individual showings that drew attention across the competition, from a long-range lob by a teenage midfielder to a record-setting hat trick for an England forward. Here is a look at the players who stood out.
Lily Yohannes of OL Lyonnes was one of the most notable. The 19-year-old American midfielder played in a trio with Melchie Dumornay and Damaris Egurrola that controlled the middle of the pitch against Inter Milan, who are making their first appearance in the tournament. Shortly before the hour mark, a Dumornay attempt on goal was ruled out for a foul. Yohannes reacted quickly and chipped the goalkeeper from long distance. It was her second chipped goal of the competition.
Her club teammate Marie-Antoinette Katoto also set the tone for Lyon's night. After a goalless draw with Chelsea on matchday 2, the forward scored twice in the first half against Inter. The brace gives her five goals and the lead in the Golden Boot race, and Lyon now holds a goal differential of 14 in the league phase standings.
Chelsea, meanwhile, got the defining performance they needed at the midway point of the season from Dutch international Wieke Kaptein. She drove a 2-0 win over Roma, picking out runners in the buildup and finding space between Roma's lines with deep passes. Kaptein set up both goals, scored by Ellie Carpenter and Kadeisha Buchanan. She had also scored the winner against Austria Wien on opening day. The result gives Chelsea seven points and a place among the top four in the league phase table.
Servette needed points and goals, and forward Gloria Marinelli delivered them. The Italian international scored in the 38th minute and again six minutes later as the Swiss side beat OH Leuven 5-1 on matchday 3, even though OH Leuven created more chances. Paola Hernandez and Joana Marchao also scored. It was Servette's first win of the competition and an important result at the halfway point.
Arsenal's Alessia Russo had perhaps the most historic night. Coming off a North London derby against Tottenham in the WSL, the Gunners met Benfica in the Champions League, and Russo scored three times. It was her first hat trick in the competition. Her penalty conversion was her 24th UWCL goal, which makes her the all-time leading English scorer in tournament history. She passed Fran Kirby, who had held the record with 21 goals. Arsenal have recently struggled to unlock defenses, but Russo has been a consistent source of goals.
