Nebraska has emerged as the leading destination for workers in a new national assessment of labor market conditions. WalletHub placed the state at number one in a ranking of all 50 states. The analysis evaluated job-market strength and economic health across 34 distinct measures. The report aims to identify where employees face the most stable and favorable working environments.
The data reveals that Nebraska’s labor market is driven by low unemployment and consistent expansion. The state recorded a 3% unemployment rate. Annual job growth averaged 1.2%, marking the fourth-highest rate in the nation. Nebraska also held the 11th-highest number of job opportunities per capita. These metrics contributed to the state’s top overall ranking.
Worker protections and benefits played a role in the state’s standing. Nebraska ranked third in the country for job security. It placed fourth for the percentage of workers with private health insurance. The state’s diverse job market and the availability of high-paying internships also factored into the final score.
North Dakota finished second in the analysis. The state reported a 2.6% unemployment rate, one of the lowest in the country. It had the lowest share of discouraged workers, a group that includes individuals who stopped looking for work due to skill gaps or age discrimination. North Dakota residents enjoy the second-shortest average commute in the nation, clocking in at about 17 minutes.
Tax burdens further distinguished the top performers. North Dakota ranked 10th for the lowest income tax burden on households earning $25,000 or less. It held the second-lowest burden for those earning between $25,000 and $50,000. The state also ranked ninth for conditions favorable to working mothers. Minnesota took third place, supported by strong household incomes and access to employee benefits.
Minnesota’s median household income, adjusted for cost of living, stood at nearly $88,000. This figure placed the state third in the nation. South Dakota and New Hampshire completed the top five. Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, noted that top-ranked states offer stable conditions for long-term planning. He stated that these locations make it easier for residents to find and retain jobs while employers provide competitive compensation.
The analysis utilized data collected as of September 30, 2026. Sources included the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and various economic research groups. The report emphasizes that factors beyond salary, such as commute times and benefits, influence where workers choose to settle.
