Flávio Bolsonaro departed Brazil for the United States on Wednesday morning, completing a multi-leg journey that moved him from the southern border to Miami within hours. The 45-year-old senator and former presidential candidate arrived at Miami Opa-locka Executive Airport, a move that bypasses the standard diplomatic channels and raises immediate questions about cross-border cooperation between neighboring nations.

The sequence of events began late Tuesday when Argentina’s migration authority reported that Bolsonaro, his wife Fernanda Antunes Figueira Bolsonaro, and their daughters Carolina and Luiza crossed into the country at 10:50 p.m. They entered through the Tancredo Neves International Bridge, a primary checkpoint connecting Brazil to the Argentine province of Misiones. The authority stated the group held valid documentation and faced no legal barriers to entry.

At 11:30 p.m. local time, the family boarded a private charter flight operated by Baires Fly S.A. Flight plans indicated the aircraft departed for Guayaquil, Ecuador. Tracking data from FlightRadar24 showed a plane matching the description landed in Guayaquil around 4 a.m. local time. Minutes later, the aircraft took off again, heading directly to Miami. It remained unclear at the time of departure whether Bolsonaro was on the plane for the final leg to the U.S., though his subsequent arrival confirmed the route.

U.S. visas for the group were granted by the Trump administration on Monday, according to a senior State Department official. President Donald Trump said early Wednesday that he welcomed the arrival, describing Bolsonaro and his family as "fine people." At Joint Base Andrews, Trump criticized the Brazilian election as "strange" and "terrible," noting he did not endorse the results despite global leaders and the Organization of American States congratulating President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his reelection by a margin of roughly 4.4 million votes.

The transit through Argentina is likely to strain relations between Lula and Argentine President Javier Milei. Milei had traveled to Brazil to support Bolsonaro’s campaign. While Milei’s spokesman Adrián Ravier stated there was no asylum request from the senator, Argentine lawmaker Marcela Pagano filed a suit in federal court in Puerto Iguazu. She requested an investigation into alleged people smuggling and abuse of authority. Pagano argued that if Bolsonaro entered, someone authorized it, and if they intended to exit via a federal airport, officials looked away.

Bolsonaro’s departure occurs while he faces investigation by Brazil’s Supreme Court for alleged corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion. The court ordered him to surrender his regular and diplomatic passports by noon on Tuesday. It remained unclear if he complied, though allies noted he also holds an Italian passport. In a video released Monday, Bolsonaro said he received the order outside the home where his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, serves a 27-year sentence under house arrest for attempting a coup.

The younger Bolsonaro stated in the same video that he was organizing opposition among congressional colleagues to the election results. His term as senator expires on January 31, 2027. Upon expiration, he will lose special jurisdiction at the Supreme Court, a procedural detail that may influence the timing of his exit. The court is investigating him for allegedly using a sports betting company to launder fraudulent deductions from government pensions and for accepting millions of dollars from a disgraced banker.

President Lula, who turned 81 on Tuesday, addressed supporters in Brasilia and said he did not have precise information on Bolsonaro’s whereabouts but confirmed he had left Brazil. "I regret that he left Brazil, because he could have stayed here and proven that the accusations are not true," Lula said. "This act of leaving Brazil is shameful." Representatives for the Brazilian government and Bolsonaro’s team did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
