A new trailer for Jumanji: Open World leans into the series' trademark mix of adventure and mistaken identity, with Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black sharing a flirtatious exchange that sets the comic tone.

Sony Pictures will put the latest installment in the Jumanji franchise into theaters on Dec. 25. The film has been billed as the final entry in the trilogy. Johnson, Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Alex Wolff are all returning to their roles.

The story follows the game's heroes as they break out of its console and cause chaos in the real world. The wider cast includes Nick Jonas, Morgan Turner, Ser'Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Rhys Darby and Danny DeVito.

In the trailer, Johnson's video game avatar is occupied by the mother of the character played by Wolff. Black's avatar, meanwhile, is taken over by a male restaurant worker. "What a woman," Black says of Johnson's avatar, and the reply comes with a flirty tone: "Oh, stop."

Open World follows 2017's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. That film rebooted the franchise, which had begun with a 1995 feature starring Robin Williams, adapted from Chris Van Allsburg's 1981 children's book.

Jake Kasdan, who directed both the 2017 film and its 2019 sequel, is back in the director's chair. He wrote the script with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. The producers are Matt Tolmach, Kasdan, Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia.

Welcome to the Jungle centered on a group of teenage friends who become trapped inside a video game, where they appear as a series of adult avatars. It opened in December 2017 and went on to pass $950 million at the global box office. The 2019 sequel, subtitled The Next Level, earned $801 million worldwide.
