2,500 Residents Set for Displacement in West Bank as Hebron Operations Begin

Israeli forces have launched a major demolition campaign in Hebron, targeting a quarter of a square kilometer of urban land just days before a general election.

For the residents of Hebron, the immediate reality is a city sealed off and a shrinking space to live and work. The Israel Defense Forces have initiated a large-scale operation that has sharply limited the movement of the city's 200,000 inhabitants. Local officials report that the military intends to displace approximately 2,500 people from a specific urban zone measuring roughly 0.35 square kilometers. This targeted approach aims to clear homes and businesses in two specific neighborhoods, forcing families to relocate within a compressed timeframe.

The scale of the physical destruction is significant. Footage shared online shows bulldozers leveling entire streets, with at least one thoroughfare appearing completely flattened. Mayor Youssef al-Jaabari stated that the operation is focused on the Ein Deir Baha and Farsh al-Hawa neighborhoods. The damage extends beyond residential housing to include businesses, industrial sites, and local infrastructure. City officials confirmed that at least 200 families have already been displaced, with dozens forced to spend the night outdoors. Some residents were instructed to leave without their vehicles, while others found their homes marked for demolition with spray paint.

The operation was announced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday, following a deadly attack on a checkpoint. Two Israeli soldiers were killed by two Palestinian gunmen, while three others were wounded. Both attackers were killed in the incident. Netanyahu stated that buildings near the attack site and the neighborhoods where the gunmen originated would be destroyed. The army has dozens of targets across the West Bank and indicated that operations would continue for several days. The Israel Defense Forces did not immediately respond to requests for further comment.

The timing of the announcement has drawn attention to the political stakes. Israel’s general election is scheduled for four days from now. Netanyahu’s campaign has centered on a promise of security. Following the checkpoint attack, he canceled his party’s campaign events for Friday morning and traveled to Hebron wearing protective armor. He posted a video from the scene, stating the goal was to evacuate residents, search house by house, and remove weapons and terrorist infrastructure.

Netanyahu also referenced plans for the largest military operation in the West Bank since 1967, though he did not specify when that broader campaign might begin. It remains unclear if the current Hebron action is a precursor to that larger plan. In an interview with i24 television released on Saturday, he threatened a significant surprise for the Palestinian Authority, which governs parts of the territory. He compared the current efforts to earlier campaigns in northern refugee camps in 2025, where hundreds of homes were destroyed and tens of thousands were displaced.

Local leadership views the operation as having political motivations. Mayor al-Jaabari told journalists that the action is driven by the upcoming elections. He suggested that the prime minister and his ministers are seeking to secure votes from the far right and settler communities. The Palestinian Authority has called for urgent international action that goes beyond condemnation to prevent further forced displacement.

Within the Israeli government, there are calls for an even more aggressive stance. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich urged for a campaign in the West Bank similar to those seen in Gaza or Lebanon. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir called for the dismantling of the Palestinian Authority. Israeli rights groups have historically criticized the demolition of homes belonging to Palestinians suspected of attacks as a form of collective punishment. This practice is common in the West Bank, and the current operation marks the latest instance of that policy in action.

The economic and social impact on the city is immediate. With the city sealed off, the flow of goods and people is restricted. The destruction of industrial sites and businesses disrupts local livelihoods. The military’s strategy involves a house-by-house approach to clear specific neighborhoods. As the election date approaches, the visibility of the operation increases, with the prime minister personally overseeing the initial phases. The outcome of the next few days will determine the extent of the displacement and the political messaging heading into the vote.
