A team of Jewish online investigators has documented the social media activity of approximately 40 medical professionals working within the UK’s National Health Service. The group, GnasherJew, published dossiers detailing how these doctors, surgeons, and therapists used public platforms to share antisemitic rhetoric and conspiracy theories. The findings challenge the perception of neutrality within Britain’s public healthcare system.
The investigation highlights specific cases of senior clinicians who made public statements aligned with political or religious narratives. Dr. Mazin Fageir, a senior trauma and orthopedic surgeon at London’s Royal Free Hospital, is one of the named individuals. His online records include a shared cartoon depicting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a Star of David armband entering an Auschwitz oven. In May 2021, he replied to a post about a rocket striking a home in Givatayim, writing, "May you live under rocket fire forever, amen."
Other dossiers include Dr. Nizar Ali Mhani, an orthodontist and lecturer at Cardiff University, who compared Hamas actions to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 2023. Dr. Asaad Nemer Shamallakh, an anesthetist in Swansea, posted on Facebook in October 2023 mourning family members killed in a missile strike. He described the conflict as a battle against Zionists, stating that the suffering would not calm until his side was victorious.
GnasherJew claims the General Medical Council has failed to address these reports adequately. The group noted a 19% regulatory action rate in antisemitism cases, arguing that this inaction encourages the behavior rather than confronting it. The organization stated that Jewish patients deserve to feel safe, but current practices suggest the opposite. The GMC maintains that antisemitism is completely unacceptable and that it will investigate serious concerns regarding patient safety.
The council reported that approximately 19.5% of doctors facing complaints for antisemitism have faced regulatory action. This includes two doctors erased from the medical register, one who received a suspension, and two who were issued warnings. The Royal Free London stated that it expects all staff to ensure their online content aligns with the trust's values of fairness and respect.
These disclosures follow a recent documentary by the Campaign Against Antisemitism titled Malignant: Antisemitism in the NHS. The film featured testimonies from Jewish patients and staff, including a nurse in Cambridge who reported a colleague performing a Nazi salute. Polling published with the documentary found that over 40% of British Jews who used NHS services since October 2023 took steps to conceal their Jewish identity.
The General Medical Council and the Royal Free London responded to inquiries about the allegations. The General Dental Council was also contacted, but the Swansea Bay University Health Board did not reply to an email request for comment by the time of publication. Inquiries sent to the relevant NHS trusts and regulatory bodies to reach the named clinicians also went unanswered.
