Latvia’s National Armed Forces announced on Saturday, October 24, that they have recovered the wreckage of a drone that crashed within the country. The debris was located in the Alūksne district. This discovery resolves a search that began last week and temporarily paused due to insufficient data.
Military records indicate the unmanned aerial vehicle most likely crossed into Latvian airspace on October 18. The initial alert triggered a joint response from the National Armed Forces and the State Police. Officials noted that a loud noise, resembling an explosion, first prompted the investigation. Search teams began looking for a potential crash site immediately after the report.
The initial search operation was suspended after two days. Authorities determined that the information available at that time was not sufficient to establish the nature of the event or the location of the debris. A week later, the search resumed and concluded with the recovery of the remains in Alūksne. An investigation into the specific circumstances of the event is now underway. An internal review has also been launched to assess the factors surrounding the incident and how it unfolded.
Latvian officials stated that no civilians were injured during the incident. Civilian infrastructure sustained no damage. Authorities have not identified any further threats to the region following the discovery. The military stressed that the area has been secured and monitored.
This event follows a similar occurrence in neighboring Lithuania. On October 18, wreckage from a suspected drone was found in the village of Juodžionys in the Pasvalys district. Lithuanian authorities stated that the drone entered their airspace from Poland. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius confirmed that the aircraft contained explosives.
Heorhii Tykhyi, the spokesman for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, addressed the Lithuanian incident. He suggested that the event was likely the result of Russian electronic warfare measures. Ukraine expressed regret regarding the violation of Lithuanian airspace. The two incidents occurred on the same day, highlighting regional airspace activity during the week.
