A critical dispute over digital sovereignty in the war zone has reached a sudden resolution. Ukraine declared on Saturday that both its commercial Starlink satellite network and the military-grade Starshield system have reverted to their full operational capacity. This marks the end of a disruptive week during which data throughput was significantly throttled, creating a tangible strain on military operations and diplomatic relations between Kyiv and Washington.

The technical metrics underscore the magnitude of the change. Defense Ministry monitoring systems confirmed that connection speeds have stabilized well above 250 mph. This is a stark contrast to the previous seven days, when caps limited throughput to roughly 100 mph. Officials noted that the reduced bandwidth severely hindered drone interception protocols and disrupted essential mission communications during this critical period.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the recovery on X, stating that the most vital development is the return to pre-restriction speeds. He emphasized that the network is now functioning at the levels required for effective defense. The president credited the resolution to direct dialogue, expressing gratitude to American counterparts, including members of Congress, the State Department, and President Trump, for their role in restoring the link.

Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara highlighted the operational impact of the fix. He stated that the outcome is paramount for frontline troops, drone operators, and logistical teams. Starlink has become a central pillar of Ukraine’s defense infrastructure since the full-scale invasion began. The network supports everything from real-time combat communications to the distribution of food and water to soldiers. It also plays a key role in defending against Iranian-made Shahed drones deployed by Russian forces.

The underlying cause of the slowdown had fueled tension between the two capitals. Ukrainian officials previously suggested that the U.S. government had directed the restrictions. Zelenskyy told NBC that his team believed SpaceX acted on a message from American authorities. This view aligned with comments from SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who wrote on Oct. 14 that Starshield is controlled by the U.S. government, with limits decided by the military and ultimately the President.

The timing of the restoration coincides with a renewed push for diplomatic engagement. A trilateral meeting between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States is scheduled for next month. Additionally, both sides have agreed to a localized ceasefire in the occupied southern city of Oleshky. The White House indicated that First Lady Melania Trump helped broker this arrangement, which facilitates humanitarian aid and civilian evacuation amid a worsening food crisis.

Combat operations continue to intensify in other regions despite the diplomatic progress. On Saturday, Ukrainian forces targeted a chemical plant in the Russian city of Tolyatti. In a reciprocal strike, a Russian drone hit a residential structure in Kyiv's Obolon District, igniting a fire. The restoration of high-speed connectivity provides Ukraine with a crucial technical advantage as these parallel military and diplomatic tracks advance.
