Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a safety advisory on October 31, 2026, directing residents to prioritize public transit and reduce vehicle speeds in residential areas this weekend.
The mayor cited earlier sunset times and the unpredictable movements of children during trick-or-treating as primary reasons for the caution. She identified public transportation as the preferred method of travel to lower congestion on local streets.
City agencies have scheduled a series of supervised activities to centralize community gatherings. The Department of Parks and Recreation is hosting a special flash mob presentation on Friday night. A family-friendly event called Halloween Hype is set for Saturday evening at the Emery Heights Community Center.
Additional trunk-or-treat events and community parties will occur throughout the weekend. Detailed schedules for these gatherings are posted on dprevents.com. The Metropolitan Police Department will operate Safe Haven community events during the nights of Friday and Saturday to provide monitored locations for families.
Bowser’s message emphasized mutual responsibility among residents to ensure safe celebrations. She encouraged the public to enjoy the festivities while maintaining vigilance in neighborhoods with high pedestrian activity.
